When a TV remote stops working, put in fresh batteries, then point it at your phone camera and press a button. A flicker means the remote works and the TV’s sensor is blocked. No flicker on a voice remote means it lost its pairing. Meanwhile a phone on the same Wi‑Fi controls the TV with Kliky.
- Replace the batteries
- Run the camera test
- Restart the TV
- Pair the remote again
1. Batteries
Replace both with a fresh matching pair and check the direction. Clean any white or green residue off the contacts. Rechargeable and solar remotes need a proper charge after sitting unused.
2. The phone camera test
Infrared is invisible to the eye and visible to most phone cameras. Open the camera, point the remote at the lens and press a button. A faint purple or white flicker means the remote is sending. If the rear camera shows nothing, try the front one; some rear cameras filter infrared out.
A flicker with no reaction from the TV points to the TV: something blocking its sensor, a soundbar in front of it, or a TV that has frozen.
3. Restart the TV
Unplug it for a full minute. A frozen TV ignores every remote and looks exactly like a dead remote.
4. Pair the remote again
Remotes with a voice button connect wirelessly and can lose their pairing after a battery change or an update.
| Remote | How to pair |
|---|---|
| Samsung Smart Remote | Hold Return + Play/Pause for 3 seconds |
| LG Magic Remote | Press the wheel (OK); to reset, hold Back + Home for 5 seconds |
| Roku voice remote | Hold the pairing button, or Back + Home, for 5 seconds |
| Fire TV remote | Hold Home for 10 seconds |
| Google TV / Chromecast remote | Hold Back + Home until the light pulses |
5. Some buttons work, others do not
If only volume or power fails, those buttons control the TV separately and need their own setup on streaming remotes. If one worn button fails, the remote is physically worn out; cleaning under the keypad sometimes revives it, a replacement is the lasting fix.
Keep watching meanwhile
A smart TV on Wi‑Fi can be controlled from a phone on the same network, so a dead remote need not stop the evening.
- Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
- Connect your phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
- Pick the TV in the list and confirm on the TV if it asks.

Infrared or wireless: which remote do you have?
A remote with no microphone button is almost always infrared. It needs a line of sight and has nothing to pair, so its problems are batteries, a blocked sensor or a failed remote. A remote with a microphone button is wireless for most keys and must be paired; it can lose that pairing after a battery change, an update or a reset.
This one distinction decides which of the steps above applies, and it is why “only the power button works” is so common: power is still sent by infrared on most voice remotes.
Symptoms and what they point to
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing works, no light | Dead batteries | Replace both |
| Only the power button works | Voice remote lost its pairing | Pair again |
| Only power and volume fail | TV control on a streaming remote is not set up | Run its TV control setup |
| Works only up close | Weak batteries or blocked sensor | Batteries, clear the sensor |
| A few buttons dead | Dirt or wear under the keypad | Clean; replace if it returns |
| TV ignores every remote | The TV has frozen | Unplug it for a minute |
More on two of these: only some buttons work and remote only works up close.
