A Roku remote that is not working needs fresh batteries first. A simple remote (no microphone button) is infrared: clear the path to the Roku. A voice remote must be paired: hold the pairing button, or Back + Home, for 5 seconds. Meanwhile Kliky controls the Roku from a phone on the same Wi‑Fi.
- Identify the remote
- Replace the batteries
- Restart the Roku
- Pair the voice remote again
Step 1: work out which Roku remote you have
Roku ships two kinds of remote, and they fail in different ways.
| Simple remote | Voice remote | |
|---|---|---|
| How to spot it | No voice or microphone button | Microphone or magnifying-glass button |
| How it talks to the Roku | Infrared: needs a clear line of sight | Wireless: paired to one Roku, works through furniture |
| Typical failure | Blocked signal or weak batteries | Lost pairing or weak batteries |
| Has a pairing button | No | Usually, inside the battery compartment or on the back |
Roku Streaming Sticks plug in behind the TV and cannot see infrared, so they only work with voice remotes.
Fixes for a simple (infrared) remote
- Clear the line of sight. Point the remote straight at the front of the Roku player or Roku TV. Move soundbars, consoles and decorations out of the way.
- Reset and replace the batteries. Take the old batteries out, press any two buttons to drain the remote, then insert a fresh matching pair. Do not mix old and new batteries.
- Check with your phone camera. Point the remote at the camera and press a button. If you see a faint flash on screen, the remote is sending a signal and the problem is on the Roku side.
A simple remote has nothing to pair. If it still does nothing with fresh batteries and a clear path, the remote itself has failed.
Fixes for a voice remote
- Restart the remote. With replaceable batteries: remove both, press any two buttons, and put them back, negative end first. Rechargeable: hold the pairing button for 20 seconds, or Back + Home for 20 seconds if there is no pairing button, then charge it.
- Restart the Roku. Unplug it from power for about 5 seconds and plug it back in. Wait for the Home screen.
- Pair it again. Hold the pairing button for 5 seconds until the status light flashes. No pairing button? Hold Back + Home for 5 seconds. Keep the remote close to the Roku while it pairs.
- Charge it. A rechargeable remote that has been dead for a while needs a proper charge. Roku recommends at least 5 hours with the cable that came with it.
- Cut down interference. A Streaming Stick sitting right behind the TV picks up noise from the HDMI ports. Roku supplies an HDMI extender for this, and moving your router to a less crowded channel helps too.
Use your phone while the remote is out of action
A Roku that is already on your Wi‑Fi accepts commands from phones on the same network, so you do not have to wait for a new remote.
- Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
- Connect your phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the Roku.
- Pick your Roku from the list.
You get the D‑pad, Home, Back, playback keys and a keyboard for searches and passwords. Kliky does not ask for a Roku account. Roku’s own app works as a remote too, after you sign in to it.
Still not working?
- Only volume and power fail: those buttons control the TV, not the Roku, and are set up separately. See Roku remote won’t control TV volume or power.
- The remote works for a minute and stops: almost always batteries or a remote that needs charging.
- Nothing helps: the remote has likely failed. See which Roku replacement remote to buy, or keep using your phone.
Roku remote symptoms and what they point to
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No response at all | Dead batteries, or a voice remote that lost its pairing | Fresh batteries, then pair again |
| Works only when pointed straight at the Roku | It is a simple infrared remote and something is in the way | Clear the path; a Streaming Stick cannot use this remote at all |
| Green light keeps flashing | Pairing is not completing | Restart the Roku, then pair with the remote close to it |
| Everything works except volume and power | TV control was never set up, or the TV changed | Set up remote for TV control |
| Works for a minute, then stops | Weak batteries, or a rechargeable remote that needs a full charge | Replace or charge |
| Slow or missed presses | Wireless interference around a stick behind the TV | Use the HDMI extender |
If two rows fit, start with batteries: they are behind most of them.
If it is a Roku TV (TCL, Hisense, onn., Philips)
A Roku TV adds two things a Roku player does not have. The TV has its own button, usually under the logo, which turns it on and switches inputs while the remote is out of action. And its simple remote already has TV power and volume, with nothing to set up.
Any Roku TV remote works on any brand of Roku TV, so a spare from a TCL works on a Hisense. If the TV has frozen rather than the remote, unplug it for a minute. Leave the recessed Reset button on the back alone: holding it erases the TV.
