Roku Remote Won’t Control TV Volume or Power? Fix It

The volume and power buttons on a Roku remote do not talk to the Roku. They send infrared commands to your TV, and they only work after the Roku has learned which TV you own.

On the Roku go to Settings › Remotes & devices › Remotes, select your remote and choose Set up remote for TV control. The Roku plays music and asks whether it stopped when it tried to mute the TV; answer the prompts until it finds the right code. This needs a voice remote. Simple remotes for Roku players have no TV buttons.

  1. Open remote settings
  2. Start setup
  3. Answer the prompts

Set up TV control

  1. Press Home, then open Settings › Remotes & devices › Remotes.
  2. Select your remote and choose Set up remote for TV control.
  3. Point the remote at the TV and follow the prompts. The Roku detects the TV brand over HDMI where it can and tests volume and power codes.
  4. If the TV brand is wrong or not detected, enter it by hand when asked.

On a Roku TV none of this is needed. The remote controls the TV directly because the Roku is the TV.

Why the buttons stopped working

  • The remote was re-paired or replaced. TV control is stored per remote. Run the setup again.
  • Something blocks the TV’s infrared sensor. Volume and power use infrared even on a wireless voice remote, so the remote must point at the TV for these buttons.
  • Weak batteries. Navigation can keep working while the stronger infrared signal fails.
  • A soundbar or receiver handles the sound. Set the TV to pass volume commands on through HDMI‑CEC, or run setup again and choose the audio device’s brand.
  • Your TV only accepts part of it. Roku notes that with some TV models the remote can control volume but not power.

Voice commands for volume use a different route

Saying “turn the volume up” does not use infrared. The Roku sends the command to the TV through the HDMI cable (HDMI‑CEC). If voice volume fails while the buttons work, turn on HDMI‑CEC in the TV’s settings. It is called Anynet+ on Samsung, SimpLink on LG and Bravia Sync on Sony.

Controlling volume from your phone

A phone has no infrared, so a remote app controls volume over the network instead. On a Roku TV this works directly. On a Roku player it depends on the TV accepting volume over HDMI‑CEC. If the TV is a smart TV on your Wi‑Fi, Kliky can also connect to the TV itself and control its volume and power as a second device.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Roku remote not have volume buttons?

Simple remotes shipped with Roku Express and similar players have no TV controls. Roku voice remotes and Roku TV remotes have volume and power buttons.

How do I program my Roku remote to my TV without codes?

You do not enter codes. Open Settings, Remotes & devices, Remotes, select the remote and choose Set up remote for TV control. The Roku tries codes for your TV brand and you confirm when the sound stops.

Can a Roku remote turn the TV on and off?

A voice remote can, once TV control is set up, on most TVs. Some TV models accept volume but not power commands.

Can the Roku remote control a soundbar?

Yes, if you pick the soundbar’s brand during TV control setup, or if the TV forwards volume commands to it over HDMI‑CEC or ARC.
