TV Compatibility Checker: Will a Phone Remote Work with Your TV?

Whether a phone can control a TV depends on the system the TV runs and on its network connection, not on the exact model. Answer a few questions and see.

3. Is it connected to your Wi‑Fi or router?

Where to find the TV model

  • Label on the back of the TV. Usually near the power cable or the ports. Look for “Model” or “Model No.”, not the serial number.
  • In the menu. Settings › Support › About This TV.
  • Box, manual or order confirmation. The same code is printed on the side of the box and in the purchase email.

The checker works without it. The model only helps us tell the year of a Samsung or LG TV and appears in your result.

Answer the questions above to see your result.

How to tell which system your TV runs

  • Look at the Home screen

A Roku TV shows the purple Roku menu, a Fire TV the Fire TV logo at start-up, a Google TV its name in the corner. Samsung, LG and Vizio have their own Home screens.

  • Look at the remote

A purple directional pad means Roku. An Alexa button means Fire TV. A Google Assistant button means Google TV or Android TV.

  • Check Settings

Settings › About (or System › About) names the software. The same screen shows whether the TV is connected to a network.

Which TVs work with a phone remote?

Most smart TVs that are connected to Wi‑Fi can be controlled from a phone. What matters is the operating system, not the brand on the front. Samsung uses Tizen, LG uses webOS, and Sony, TCL and Philips mostly run Google TV. Roku and Fire TV sticks work the same way on any TV they’re plugged into.

Non‑smart TVs have no network connection, so a phone can’t reach them over Wi‑Fi. Plug in a Roku or Fire TV stick and control that from Kliky instead.

Compatibility questions

Why does the checker not ask for my TV model?

Because the model rarely decides it. A phone remote works when the TV runs a supported system and is on your home network. Two TVs of the same brand can run different systems, which is why the checker asks about the Home screen instead.

My TV isn’t smart. Can I still use my phone?

Not directly: Kliky works over Wi‑Fi, and non‑smart TVs aren’t on the network. Plug in a Roku or Fire TV stick and control that instead.

How accurate is the checker?

It tells you whether your TV’s system is one Kliky is built for and what the TV will ask when you connect. The final proof is in the app: if the TV appears in the list on your Wi‑Fi, it works.

I do not know which system my TV runs. What now?

Check the Home screen and the remote, as described on this page, or pick “Something else, or I am not sure”. You can also install Kliky and see whether it finds the TV.

Do I need to install anything to use the checker?

No. The checker runs on this page. You only install Kliky when you want to control the TV.
