Put fresh batteries in the remote and stand near the Roku. Hold the pairing button for 5 seconds until the status light flashes. If your remote has no pairing button, hold Back + Home for 5 seconds. The Roku finds the remote and shows a pairing message on screen. Simple remotes without a voice button use infrared and need no pairing.
- Power the Roku
- Prepare the remote
- Start pairing
- Wait
Does your remote need pairing at all?
Only voice remotes pair. They have a microphone or magnifying-glass button and talk to the Roku wirelessly.
Simple remotes have no voice button and use infrared, like an old TV remote. Put batteries in, point at the Roku, and it works. There is nothing to sync, and no code to enter.
Pair a Roku voice remote
- Turn the TV on and switch to the Roku. Wait for the Home screen.
- Insert fresh batteries, or make sure a rechargeable remote has charge.
- With a pairing button: hold it for 5 seconds until the status light flashes.
- Without a pairing button: hold Back + Home together for 5 seconds until the light flashes.
- Keep the remote within a few feet of the Roku. A pairing message appears on the TV when it is done.
A second-hand or replacement voice remote pairs the same way. It simply forgets the Roku it was paired with before.
Reset a Roku remote that won’t pair
- Replaceable batteries: take both out, press any two buttons, and put them back in, negative end first.
- Rechargeable with a pairing button: hold the pairing button for 20 seconds.
- Rechargeable without a pairing button: hold Back + Home for 20 seconds.
Then restart the Roku by unplugging it for about 5 seconds, and repeat the pairing steps once the Home screen is back.
Pair a second remote, or pair without a working remote
With one working remote you can add another from the menu: Settings › Remotes & devices › Set up a new device › Remote, then put the new remote into pairing mode.
With no working remote, use your phone to reach that menu. On the same Wi‑Fi as the Roku, open Kliky, pick the Roku and navigate with the on-screen D‑pad. Restarting the Roku by unplugging it also triggers a search for remotes in pairing mode.
“Programming” the remote for TV volume and power
If the remote controls the Roku but not the TV’s volume or power, that is a different setup, done after pairing. Go to Settings › Remotes & devices › Remotes, select your remote and choose Set up remote for TV control. Details are in Roku remote won’t control TV volume or power.
Pairing during first setup or after a factory reset
A new or reset Roku shows a screen asking for a remote. Put batteries in, hold the remote close and it usually pairs by itself within 30 seconds. If it does not, hold the pairing button, or Back + Home, for 5 seconds until the light flashes.
A simple infrared remote skips this step: press OK and setup continues. If you have no remote at all, a Roku with an Ethernet port can be brought online by cable and then controlled from a phone; a Wi‑Fi-only stick cannot. See connect a Roku to Wi‑Fi without a remote.
If pairing keeps failing
- No light when you hold the pairing button: the batteries are dead or the remote needs charging.
- The light flashes but nothing appears on the TV: unplug the Roku for 5 seconds and try again as soon as the Home screen loads.
- It pairs and then drops: a Streaming Stick behind the TV is picking up interference; use the HDMI extender.
- Two Rokus in the house: unplug the other one while pairing, so the remote does not attach to it.
What the light is telling you is covered in Roku remote blinking light.
