To fix a Firestick remote, put in fresh alkaline batteries and hold Home for 10 seconds within 10 feet to pair it again. If that fails, unplug the Fire TV for a minute and reset the remote: hold Left + Menu + Back for 12 seconds. Meanwhile Kliky controls the Fire TV from your phone.
- Replace the batteries
- Pair again
- Restart the Fire TV
- Reset the remote
1. Replace the batteries first
Bluetooth needs more power than infrared. Batteries that still run a wall clock can be too weak for a Fire TV remote, and the first symptom is a remote that works only sometimes. Use two fresh AAA alkaline batteries and check they sit the right way round.
2. Pair the remote again
Hold the Home button for 10 seconds, standing within about 10 feet of the Fire TV. The light on the remote blinks while it searches and the TV shows a message when the remote connects.
3. Restart the Fire TV
Unplug the Fire TV Stick, Cube or TV from power for a full minute and plug it back in. Wait for the Home screen, then press Home on the remote. A frozen Fire TV looks exactly like a dead remote.
4. Reset the remote
A reset clears the remote’s stored pairing. For most Fire TV remotes, including the Alexa Voice Remote (2nd and 3rd generation) and the Lite remote:
- Unplug the Fire TV and wait 60 seconds.
- Hold Left, Menu and Back together for 12 seconds.
- Release, wait 5 seconds, and remove the batteries.
- Plug the Fire TV back in and wait for the screen that says the remote cannot be detected.
- Put the batteries back and press Home. If it does not pair, hold Home for 10 seconds.
The first-generation Alexa Voice Remote uses Left + Menu for 12 seconds instead. Step-by-step instructions for every model are in how to pair or reset a Fire TV remote.
5. Remove interference and obstacles
- Use the HDMI extender that came in the box so the stick is not pressed against the back of the TV.
- Move wireless speakers, baby monitors and USB 3 hard drives away from the Fire TV.
- A metal TV cabinet around a Fire TV Cube or stick weakens Bluetooth.
6. Check how many devices are paired
A Fire TV accepts a limited number of Bluetooth remotes and controllers. If several game controllers and old remotes are paired, remove the ones you no longer use under Settings › Controllers & Bluetooth Devices. You will need a working remote or a phone app to get there.
7. Control the Fire TV from your phone
A Fire TV that is on your Wi‑Fi can be controlled from a phone on the same network.
- Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
- Join the same Wi‑Fi as the Fire TV.
- Pick the Fire TV in the list and confirm the code shown on the TV.
This also gives you a way into Settings to pair a replacement remote. If the Fire TV is not on Wi‑Fi, see connect a Firestick to Wi‑Fi without a remote.
Only volume or power not working?
Those buttons control the TV by infrared and have their own setup. See Firestick remote won’t control TV volume.

Fire TV Stick, Cube and Fire TV sets
A Fire TV Stick has no buttons and no infrared sensor, so the remote, the TV’s own remote over HDMI‑CEC, or a phone are the only ways in. A Fire TV Cube also answers to “Alexa” spoken aloud, which is enough to open apps and play titles while the remote is dead. A Fire TV smart TV from Insignia, Toshiba or Amazon has one button on the set for power and inputs, and an infrared sensor that accepts a universal remote.
