How to Connect a Firestick to Wi‑Fi Without the Remote

A Fire TV Stick that has lost its network is unreachable by phone apps, because those apps talk to it over the network. You have to get it online by another route first.

If the Firestick is still on working Wi‑Fi, control it from a phone app and change the network under Settings › Network. If it is offline, try your TV’s remote through HDMI‑CEC first. Failing that, make a phone hotspot with the old Wi‑Fi’s name and password so the Firestick reconnects, then control it from a second phone.

Case 1: the Firestick is still online

Do this before you unplug the old router or leave the old network.

  1. Put your phone on the same Wi‑Fi as the Fire TV.
  2. Open Kliky, pick the Fire TV and confirm the code on the TV.
  3. On the Fire TV open Settings › Network, choose the new network and enter the password, with the on-screen keys or with the phone keyboard.

The app loses the Fire TV when it switches network. Join the new Wi‑Fi on the phone and connect again.

Case 2: offline, using your TV’s remote

HDMI‑CEC lets the TV’s remote send arrow and select keys to the Firestick through the HDMI cable. It needs no network.

  1. In the TV’s settings, turn on HDMI‑CEC. It is called Anynet+ (Samsung), SimpLink (LG), Bravia Sync (Sony) or CEC on other brands.
  2. Switch to the Firestick’s HDMI input.
  3. Use the TV remote’s arrows and OK to open Settings › Network and join the new Wi‑Fi.

There is usually no Home button equivalent, so navigate with Back and the arrows. Not every TV supports it.

Case 3: offline, using the hotspot trick

The Firestick keeps trying to rejoin the last network it used. Recreate that network and it connects. You need two phones (or a phone and a tablet) and the old network’s exact name and password.

  1. On phone A, set the personal hotspot’s name and password to match the old Wi‑Fi exactly, and turn it on.
  2. Restart the Firestick by unplugging it. Wait a minute while it joins the hotspot.
  3. Connect phone B to the same hotspot, open the remote app and pick the Fire TV.
  4. On the Fire TV open Settings › Network and join your real Wi‑Fi.
  5. Turn the hotspot off and move phone B to the real Wi‑Fi.
The Firestick uses the hotspot phone’s mobile data while connected. Switch networks before you start a video. The trick does not work on a factory-reset Firestick, which remembers no network.

Ethernet, where there is a port

Fire TV smart TVs and the Fire TV Cube have or support wired Ethernet, and Amazon sells an Ethernet adapter for sticks. A wired connection needs no password, so the device comes online and a phone app on the same router can take over.

If the Firestick was factory reset

A reset Firestick opens on a screen asking you to pair a remote, and phone apps cannot get past it. Use the TV remote through HDMI‑CEC if your TV supports it, or get a replacement remote: see Fire TV remote replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect a Firestick to Wi‑Fi with just my phone?

Only if the Firestick is already on a network the phone can join, or if you recreate its previous network with a hotspot from a second phone. An offline Firestick cannot be found by any phone app.

Can I use hotel Wi‑Fi on a Firestick without the remote?

It is difficult. Hotel networks need a sign-in page and often keep devices from seeing each other, which blocks phone remote apps. Pack the remote when you travel with a Fire TV.

Will a USB keyboard work to set up Wi‑Fi on a Firestick?

Sometimes. A Fire TV Stick needs an OTG adapter on its power port and support varies by model. Fire TV Cube and Fire TV smart TVs with USB ports are more reliable.

Does the hotspot trick use data?

Yes. Anything the Fire TV downloads while on the hotspot uses that phone’s mobile data. Move the Fire TV to your home Wi‑Fi right away.
