To pair: hold the Home button for 10 seconds near the Fire TV. To reset: unplug the Fire TV, hold Left + Menu + Back for 12 seconds, remove the batteries, plug the Fire TV in, reinsert the batteries and press Home. To add a second remote: Settings › Controllers & Bluetooth Devices › Amazon Fire TV Remotes › Add New Remote.
- Power the Fire TV
- Prepare the remote
- Pair
Pair a Fire TV remote
- Turn on the TV, switch to the Fire TV input and wait for the Home screen.
- Put fresh batteries in the remote.
- Stand within 10 feet and hold Home for 10 seconds.
- Release when the light blinks. The TV confirms when the remote is connected.
A brand-new remote usually pairs by itself the first time the batteries go in. A remote that was used with another Fire TV needs the 10-second hold.
Add a second or replacement remote
With the old remote or a phone app, open Settings › Controllers & Bluetooth Devices › Amazon Fire TV Remotes › Add New Remote, then hold Home for 10 seconds on the new remote and select it on screen.
No working remote? Open the menu from your phone. On the same Wi‑Fi, pick the Fire TV in Kliky and navigate there with the on-screen D‑pad.
Reset a Fire TV remote
| Remote | Buttons to hold |
|---|---|
| Alexa Voice Remote (2nd, 3rd gen), Lite, Smart TV remote | Left + Menu + Back, 12 seconds |
| Alexa Voice Remote (1st gen) | Left + Menu, 12 seconds |
| Basic Edition remote | Hold Home, press Menu 3 times, release Home, press Menu 9 times |
The full sequence around those buttons is the same:
- Unplug the Fire TV and wait 60 seconds.
- Press and hold the buttons from the table.
- Release, wait 5 seconds, and remove the batteries.
- Plug the Fire TV in and wait for the message that the remote cannot be detected.
- Reinsert the batteries and press Home. Hold it for 10 seconds if nothing happens.
Unpair a remote
Go to Settings › Controllers & Bluetooth Devices › Amazon Fire TV Remotes, highlight the remote you want to remove, press the Menu button and confirm with Select. You cannot unpair the remote you are holding, so use a second remote or a phone app to do it.
“Programming” the remote to control the TV
Pairing connects the remote to the Fire TV. Making the volume and power buttons control your TV is a separate step under Settings › Equipment Control. See Firestick remote won’t control TV volume.
Pairing during first setup or after a factory reset
A new or reset Fire TV shows a screen that looks for a remote. Put batteries in and press Home; if nothing happens within a few seconds, hold Home for 10 seconds. The remote pairs before the Fire TV asks for Wi‑Fi, so no network is needed for this step.
With no remote at all, setup cannot start from a phone, because the Fire TV is not on Wi‑Fi yet. A TV remote working through HDMI‑CEC can move through the setup screens on many TVs.
If pairing keeps failing
- Use alkaline batteries; rechargeable cells run at a lower voltage and some remotes will not pair on them.
- Stand within about 10 feet, with nothing metal between the remote and the Fire TV.
- Unplug the Fire TV for a minute, wait for the Home screen, then hold Home.
- Remove remotes you no longer use under Settings › Controllers & Bluetooth Devices, then try again.
- Reset the remote, then pair once more.
If the Fire TV is on Wi‑Fi, a phone remote gets you into Settings to add the new remote there.
