If only the power button fails, the remote’s TV control needs setting up again: on streaming remotes, power and volume go to the TV by infrared. If only power works, the remote lost its pairing: pair it again. A few dead buttons mean dirt or wear. Your phone covers all three meanwhile.
Only power and volume do not work
On a streaming remote these keys do not go to the streamer. They send infrared to the TV, using a code chosen during setup. A new TV, a soundbar or a reset loses that code.
- Roku: Settings › Remotes & devices › Remotes › your remote › Set up remote for TV control. See Roku remote will not control TV volume or power.
- Fire TV: Settings › Equipment Control › Manage Equipment › TV › Change TV. See Firestick remote will not control TV volume.
- Google TV and Chromecast: Settings › Remotes & Accessories › Set up remote buttons.
Infrared also needs a clear path to the front of the TV, even when the streaming stick is hidden behind it.
Only the power button works
This is the reverse: infrared is fine, the wireless link is gone. It is common on Samsung Smart Remotes, Sony and Hisense voice remotes and Google TV remotes.
- Samsung: point at the TV and hold Return + Play/Pause for 3 seconds or more.
- Sony: hold Volume − and the microphone button until the light blinks.
- Roku voice remote: hold the pairing button, or Back + Home, for 5 seconds.
- Fire TV: hold Home for 10 seconds.
- Google TV: hold Back + Home until the light pulses.
A few buttons do not work
When Home works but OK does not, or one arrow is dead, the cause is physical. Take the batteries out and press every button firmly a few times to free a stuck key. Clean around the keys with a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Buttons used most, usually OK and volume, wear through first, and at that point the remote is due for replacement.
A TV power button that does nothing while the remote’s light flashes can also be the TV: unplug it for a minute.
Use your phone meanwhile
A phone on the same Wi‑Fi as the TV has every key, including the ones that wore out.
- Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
- Connect your phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
- Pick the TV in the list and confirm on the TV if it asks.
Turning the TV on from a phone needs the TV to stay on the network in standby. See turn on a TV without a remote.
