Universal Remote Codes for a TV: How to Find and Enter Yours

A universal remote knows hundreds of infrared “languages” and a code tells it which one your TV speaks. The code depends on the remote’s maker and version as much as on the TV, which is why a list from the wrong remote never works.

To find a universal remote code, read the remote’s version inside the battery compartment and look up your TV brand in that version’s code list. Hold Setup, press TV, enter the code. If none works, run the automatic code search. A Wi‑Fi app such as Kliky needs no codes.

Finding the right code list

Code lists are specific to the remote. On GE remotes the battery compartment carries a version such as CL3, CL4 or CL5, and each has its own list. Philips, RCA and One For All remotes show a model number in the same place. Search the maker’s support site for that model and your TV brand. Brands usually have several codes; try them in order.

Entering a code

The buttons differ a little by maker, but the pattern is the same:

  1. Turn the TV on.
  2. Hold Setup (or Code Search) until the indicator light stays on.
  3. Press the TV device button.
  4. Enter the code. The light goes out when it is accepted.
  5. Point at the TV and press Power. If the TV turns off, the code is right; test volume and input too.

If only some keys work, try the next code for that brand.

Every universal remote can step through its whole library:

  1. Turn the TV on.
  2. Hold Setup until the light stays on, then press TV.
  3. Point at the TV and press Power (on some remotes, Channel up) repeatedly, about once a second.
  4. When the TV turns off, press Enter or OK to store the code.

It can take a few minutes. The exact keys are in the remote’s leaflet, and the maker’s site has it by model number.

What codes cannot do

Codes are infrared. They cannot control a Roku Streaming Stick or a Fire TV Stick, which have no infrared sensor, and they do not bring voice search or a keyboard. Brand-specific notes: Roku, Firestick, Samsung, LG, Sony, Philips remotes.

The route with no codes

Smart TVs and streaming devices announce themselves on your Wi‑Fi, so an app lists them by name and connects.

  1. Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Connect your phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
  3. Pick the TV in the list and confirm on the TV if it asks.
