To make a Roku or Firestick remote control a Samsung or LG TV, set up TV control on the Roku (Settings › Remotes & devices) or Fire TV (Settings › Equipment Control); it then handles power and volume. For the reverse, turn on HDMI‑CEC on the TV. Kliky controls both from one screen.
Make the Roku or Firestick remote control the TV
A Roku voice remote and an Alexa Voice Remote have power and volume buttons that send infrared to the TV. They need to learn your TV brand once.
- Roku: Settings › Remotes & devices › Remotes › your remote › Set up remote for TV control. Details in Roku remote won’t control TV volume.
- Fire TV: Settings › Equipment Control › Manage Equipment › TV › Change TV. Details in Firestick remote won’t control TV volume.
This covers power, volume and mute. It does not open the TV’s own menus or switch inputs on most TVs, so keep the TV remote for those. Simple Roku remotes and the Fire TV Lite remote have no TV buttons at all.
Steer the Roku or Firestick with the TV remote
HDMI‑CEC passes the TV remote’s arrows, OK, Back and playback keys through the HDMI cable to the stick.
| TV brand | Name of HDMI‑CEC | Where to turn it on |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung | Anynet+ | Settings › Connection › External Device Manager |
| LG | SimpLink | Settings › General › Devices › HDMI Settings |
| Sony | Bravia Sync | Settings › External inputs |
| Vizio | CEC | Settings › System › CEC |
Menu names move between model years, so search the TV’s settings for the name in the middle column. On the Fire TV, HDMI‑CEC is under Settings › Display & Sounds. There is no Home or voice button this way, which makes it a good fallback when the stick’s remote is lost, and a poor everyday setup.
A Roku remote on a TV that is not a Roku TV
Samsung, LG and Vizio do not make Roku TVs. A Roku remote can run their power and volume, but it will never browse their smart menus. The same goes for a Fire TV remote. If what you want is the TV’s own apps, use the TV’s remote or a phone app that talks to the TV directly.
Both devices from one phone
Kliky lists the smart TV and the stick as two devices on your Wi‑Fi and switches between them in a tap, each with its own layout. That gives you the TV’s menus and inputs and the stick’s navigation without juggling remotes or relying on HDMI‑CEC.
