Any infrared universal remote that lists Samsung controls a Samsung TV’s power, volume, channels and menus after you enter a Samsung code or run its code search. It will not have voice or the pointer. If the TV is on Wi‑Fi, your phone works as a universal remote with no codes: open Kliky, pick the TV and choose Allow on the screen.
What a universal remote can and cannot do on a Samsung TV
| Infrared universal remote | Samsung Smart Remote | Phone app | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power, volume, channels, menus | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Needs a setup code | Yes | No, it pairs | No |
| Voice search | No | Yes | Yes |
| Keyboard for typing | No | No | Yes |
| Works without Wi‑Fi | Yes | Yes | No |
| Controls other brands too | Yes | Devices on HDMI | Yes |
Samsung TVs keep an infrared sensor even on models that ship with a Bluetooth Smart Remote, which is why a basic universal remote still works with them.
Program a universal remote for a Samsung TV
Every maker has its own button names, but the two methods are the same everywhere.
- Direct code entry. Turn the TV on. Hold the setup button on the universal remote until its light stays on, press the TV button, and type a Samsung code from the list that came with the remote. Test Power and Volume.
- Automatic code search. If no code works, start the search mode described in the remote’s manual and press Power repeatedly until the TV turns off, then save.
The codes belong to the maker of the universal remote, not to Samsung, so use the list in that remote’s manual or on its maker’s website.
Use the Samsung remote as a universal remote
Samsung’s own remote can control a cable box, Blu‑ray player or soundbar connected to the TV, so one remote runs the whole setup.
- Press Home and open Source (on newer models, Connected Devices).
- Select Universal Remote, then New Device.
- Choose the type of device, for example Cable/Satellite Box, and follow the prompts.
Samsung notes this covers third-party devices that are connected to the TV. Streaming sticks are usually steered through HDMI‑CEC, which Samsung calls Anynet+.
The option with no codes: your phone
A Samsung smart TV accepts remote commands over your home network. A phone app therefore needs no code and no line of sight.
- Connect your phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
- Open Kliky and pick the TV.
- Choose Allow when the TV asks.
You get the full remote, a keyboard and voice search, and the same app controls a Roku, a Fire TV or an LG TV elsewhere in the house. It does need the TV to be online; for a Samsung TV that is not a smart TV, an infrared remote is the only way.
