To replace a Samsung TV remote, find the model number starting with BN59 on the old remote or in the manual and buy that model or a listed compatible one. A standard infrared Samsung remote works with almost any Samsung TV; a Smart Remote must match the TV’s generation. Meanwhile Kliky controls the TV from your phone.
The two kinds of Samsung remote
| Standard remote | Smart Remote | |
|---|---|---|
| Looks like | Long, with number keys | Short, few buttons, often solar powered |
| Connection | Infrared | Bluetooth, with infrared for basics |
| Voice button | No | Yes |
| Needs pairing | No | Yes |
| Works across TV generations | Usually | Only on compatible models |
If you only need power, volume, channels and menus, a standard Samsung infrared remote is the safe purchase. If you want voice, buy the Smart Remote made for your TV’s model year.
Find the right model
- Look for a code starting with BN59‑ on the back of the old remote or inside its battery cover.
- No remote left? The TV’s model code is on a label on the back of the TV. Search for that code plus “remote”, or check the manual.
- Avoid listings that do not state which TV models or years the remote supports.
Pair a Samsung Smart Remote
- Turn the TV on with the button on the TV if needed.
- Point the remote at the TV from about a foot away.
- Hold Return and Play/Pause together for more than 3 seconds.
- The TV shows a message when the remote is connected.
A SolarCell remote that has sat in a drawer may simply be out of charge. Leave it face down in light for a while, or charge it through its USB‑C port, before deciding it is broken.
No purchase needed: use your phone
A Samsung smart TV on your Wi‑Fi can be controlled from a phone on the same network. Kliky gives you the remote, a keyboard and voice search. To get a TV with no remote onto Wi‑Fi first, use the controller button on the TV, described in how to control a Samsung TV without a remote.
