An LG TV can be controlled by almost any universal remote, and the LG Magic Remote can itself act as one for your other devices. Here is what each route gives you.

Any infrared universal remote that lists LG controls an LG TV’s power, volume, channels and menus after you enter an LG code or run its code search. It will not move the on-screen pointer or do voice. If the TV is on Wi‑Fi, your phone works with no codes: open Kliky, pick the TV and confirm on the screen.

Program a universal remote for an LG TV

  1. Direct code entry. Turn the TV on. Hold the setup button on the universal remote until its light stays on, press the TV button, and type an LG code from the remote’s code list. Test Power and Volume.
  2. Automatic code search. If no code works, run the search mode from the remote’s manual and stop when the TV turns off.

Codes come from the maker of the universal remote, not from LG. An old LG TV that is not a smart TV is controlled the same way, and for those sets infrared is the only option.

Use the LG Magic Remote as a universal remote

The Magic Remote can control a set-top box, player or soundbar connected to the TV.

  1. Press Settings and open All Settings.
  2. Go to General › Devices › External Devices › Universal Control Settings. On older webOS versions it is under Connection › Device Connector.
  3. Pick the device type and brand and follow the prompts.

Streaming sticks are usually steered through HDMI‑CEC, which LG calls SimpLink.

The option with no codes: your phone

An LG webOS TV accepts remote commands over your home network.

  1. Connect your phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
  2. Open Kliky and pick the TV.
  3. Accept the prompt on the TV, or type the PIN it shows.

You get the remote, a touchpad for the pointer, a keyboard and voice search. The same app controls other TV brands and streaming sticks in the house.

Frequently asked questions

Will any universal remote work with an LG TV?

Nearly all infrared universal remotes include LG codes. Check that LG is on the remote’s brand list before buying.

What is the universal remote code for an LG TV?

There is no single code. Look up LG in the code list supplied with your universal remote, or use its automatic code search.

Can I use my phone as a universal remote for an LG TV?

Yes, for an LG smart TV on your Wi‑Fi. A remote app controls it over the network with no setup code.

Can the LG Magic Remote control a cable box or soundbar?

Yes. Set the device up under Universal Control Settings (Device Connector on older webOS).

What about an old LG TV?

A non-smart LG TV has no network connection, so it needs an infrared remote. Universal remotes that list LG work.
