Fire TV Stick Lite, 4K and Cube: Which Remote Each Uses

Every current Fire TV remote has an Alexa button and pairs over Bluetooth, so they are far more interchangeable than Roku’s. The differences are in the extra buttons.

Fire TV Stick Lite ships with the Alexa Voice Remote Lite, which has no TV power or volume buttons. Fire TV Stick and Stick 4K ship with the Alexa Voice Remote with TV controls. Stick 4K Max and Fire TV Cube ship with the Enhanced remote, which adds more buttons. Any current Alexa Voice Remote can be paired with any of them.

Which Fire TV Stick do I have? Model numbers

The model number is printed on the stick itself and shown under Settings › My Fire TV › About.

Model numberDeviceReleased
W87CUNFire TV Stick (1st generation)2014
LY73PRFire TV Stick (2nd generation)2016
E9L29YFire TV Stick 4K (1st generation)2018
S3L46NFire TV Stick (3rd generation) and Fire TV Stick Lite2020

The 3rd generation Stick and the Lite share the number S3L46N; the About screen tells them apart. “CE0984”, which people often search for, is a regulatory mark printed on many Amazon devices, not a model.

For the remote, the generation matters less than it seems: current Alexa Voice Remotes pair with the 2nd generation Stick and later. For the 2014 Stick, check the compatibility list on the remote’s Amazon page before buying.

The Lite remote: what is missing

The Lite remote navigates and takes voice commands like the others, but cannot turn the TV on or change its volume. You keep the TV’s own remote within reach, or ask Alexa to change the volume if the TV accepts HDMI‑CEC commands. Pairing a standard Alexa Voice Remote with a Stick Lite adds the buttons; see Firestick remote replacement.

Fire TV Cube: remote optional

The Cube has microphones and a speaker of its own, so “Alexa, play…” works with the remote lost. It also has an infrared emitter to control the TV, soundbar and cable box. The remote still matters for browsing menus quickly.

Pairing any of them

Hold Home for 10 seconds near the Fire TV. If it does not connect, add it under Settings › Controllers & Bluetooth Devices › Amazon Fire TV Remotes. Full steps and resets: how to pair a Fire TV remote.

The remote that works with every model

A phone app controls a Stick Lite, a 4K Max and a Cube identically over Wi‑Fi. Kliky pairs with a four-digit code shown on the TV and adds a keyboard for searches and passwords.
