TCL TV Remote Not Working? How to Fix It

TCL TVs in the US are mostly TCL Roku TVs or TCL Google TVs, and a few are Fire TVs. Each uses the remote of its software.

To fix a TCL TV remote, put in fresh batteries, unplug the TV for a minute, and pair the remote again if it has a microphone button. If the TCL TV is on Wi‑Fi, Kliky on your phone controls it while you sort the remote out.

  1. Replace the batteries
  2. Restart the TV
  3. Pair the remote again

Which TCL remote do you have?

TCL Roku TV remote: short, with a purple directional pad and no number keys. Without a microphone button it is infrared; with one it is a paired voice remote.

TCL Google TV remote: longer, with a Google Assistant button and usually number keys or a number shortcut. It sends power by infrared and the rest over Bluetooth.

TCL Fire TV remote: has an Alexa button and pairs like any Fire TV remote.

Fixing the TCL remote

Replace both batteries, then point the remote at your phone’s front camera and press a key. A flash on the phone screen means the remote sends infrared; a voice remote may flash only on Power.

  • TCL Roku TV: a simple remote has nothing to pair. For a voice remote, hold the pairing button in the battery compartment, or Back + Home, for 5 seconds near the TV. Full steps: Roku remote not working.
  • TCL Google TV or Android TV: open Settings › Remotes & Accessories and pair the remote; the TV shows which buttons to hold. More in Google TV remote not working.
  • TCL Fire TV: hold Home for 10 seconds within about 10 feet of the TV. Full steps: Firestick remote not working.

If nothing changes, unplug the TCL TV for a minute. A TV that has frozen ignores a working remote.

The buttons on the TCL TV itself

The TCL button is under the logo in the middle of the bottom edge on most models. On a TCL Roku TV that single button gives power and inputs only, which is why a dead remote feels so limiting on these sets.

Use your phone as the TCL remote

  1. Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Connect the phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
  3. Pick the TV in the list. A TCL Roku TV connects with no code; a TCL Google TV shows a six-digit code to type in.

A TCL TV that is offline cannot be reached by a phone: see how to use a TCL TV without a remote.

Replacing a TCL remote

A TCL Roku TV accepts any Roku TV remote and any Roku voice remote; they are not tied to TCL. A TCL Google TV needs a TCL Google TV remote, or an infrared universal remote for the basics.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset a TCL Roku TV remote?

Take out the batteries, press any two buttons and put them back. A voice remote then needs pairing: hold the pairing button, or Back and Home, for 5 seconds.

Why is my TCL remote not working after changing batteries?

A voice remote can lose its pairing when the batteries are changed. Pair it again. A simple infrared remote only needs a clear path to the front of the TV.

Can I control a TCL TV without the remote?

Yes. The button under the TCL logo gives power and inputs, and a phone on the same Wi‑Fi gives the full remote.
