Most Vizio remotes are plain infrared remotes with nothing to pair; newer TVs come with a voice remote that also uses Bluetooth.

To fix a Vizio TV remote, put in fresh batteries, unplug the TV for a minute, and pair the remote again if it has a microphone button. If the Vizio TV is on Wi‑Fi, Kliky on your phone controls it while you sort the remote out.

  1. Replace the batteries
  2. Restart the TV
  3. Pair the remote again

Which Vizio remote do you have?

Look at the remote. A Vizio remote without a microphone button is infrared: it has to be pointed at the TV and has nothing to pair. A remote with a microphone button came with newer SmartCast TVs; it sends voice over Bluetooth and the other keys by infrared, so buttons can work while voice does not.

The V, or Home, button in the middle and the row of app shortcuts are the same on both, so the microphone is the only reliable way to tell them apart.

Reset the Vizio remote and the TV

Vizio’s own advice is to drain both the remote and the TV:

  1. Take the batteries out of the remote.
  2. Hold the remote’s Power button for 5 seconds, then press every other button once. This frees a stuck key, which is a common reason for a remote that seems dead.
  3. Put the batteries back.
  4. Unplug the TV, hold the power button on the TV for 5 to 10 seconds, and plug it back in.

If the remote has a microphone button and only voice fails, pair it again from the TV’s menu under the remote or Bluetooth settings.

Fixing the Vizio remote

Replace both batteries, then point the remote at your phone’s front camera and press a key. A flash on the phone screen means the remote sends infrared; a voice remote may flash only on Power.

If nothing changes, unplug the Vizio TV for a minute. A TV that has frozen ignores a working remote.

The buttons on the Vizio TV itself

Vizio puts the TV’s own buttons on the back, in the lower left or lower right corner: a row with Power, Volume and Input, or a single multi-function button. The infrared sensor is on the lower front edge, where a soundbar placed in front of the TV can block it.

Use your phone as the Vizio remote

  1. Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Connect the phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
  3. Pick the TV in the list. Type the four-digit code the TV shows.

A Vizio TV that is offline cannot be reached by a phone: see how to use a Vizio TV without a remote.

Replacing a Vizio remote

Any infrared universal remote that lists Vizio works. A replacement Vizio remote for SmartCast TVs works across most model years; a voice remote is only useful on TVs that shipped with one.
