Most remotes take two AAA batteries; LG Magic Remotes and some Roku remotes take two AA. Recent Samsung Smart Remotes have no replaceable battery: they charge by a solar panel on the back or USB‑C. Use alkaline cells, both new, same brand. If new batteries change nothing, the remote needs pairing again or has failed; your phone can stand in with Kliky.
Which batteries your remote takes
| Remote | Batteries |
|---|---|
| Roku simple and voice remotes | 2 × AAA (older and some TV remotes: 2 × AA) |
| Roku Voice Remote Pro | Built-in rechargeable |
| Fire TV Alexa Voice Remote | 2 × AAA |
| Samsung Smart Remote, 2021 and later | Built-in, solar and USB‑C |
| Samsung standard and older Smart Remotes | 2 × AAA or 2 × AA |
| LG Magic Remote | 2 × AA |
| Vizio | 2 × AAA |
| Chromecast and Google TV voice remote | 2 × AAA |
The size is also molded into the plastic inside the compartment.
How to open the battery cover
Look for a small arrow or ridged patch on the back: press there and slide in the direction of the arrow. If the back has no seam near the bottom, the whole rear shell slides. On older Samsung Smart Remotes, push the back cover upward from the bottom edge, or press the small release button. Roku remotes slide downward. Do not pry with a knife; the clips break.
Leaked or corroded batteries
White or blue-green crust on the springs is leaked alkaline electrolyte. Wearing gloves, remove the batteries and wipe the contacts with a cotton swab dipped in white vinegar or lemon juice, which neutralizes it. Dry with a clean swab, then lightly scrape the contact with a fingernail or pencil eraser until metal shows. Let it dry before inserting new batteries.
If the crust has crept onto the circuit board, the remote usually does not recover.
New batteries, still dead
- Check the + and − marks; one reversed cell is enough.
- A voice remote often loses its pairing when the batteries come out. See TV remote not working for the pairing step by brand.
- Rechargeable NiMH cells give 1.2 V, and some remotes read that as flat.
While you sort it out, the TV still answers to a phone on the same Wi‑Fi:
- Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
- Connect your phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
- Pick the TV in the list and confirm on the TV if it asks.
