To stop a TV reading menus aloud, turn off its screen reader. Roku: press the star button four times. Fire TV: hold Back + Menu for two seconds. Samsung: Accessibility › Voice Guide. Where the setting is, by TV
| TV | What it is called | Where to turn it off |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung | Voice Guide | Hold the volume button for 2 seconds › Accessibility › Voice Guide. Or Settings › General › Accessibility › Voice Guide Settings |
| Roku and Roku TV | Screen reader (Audio Guide on older software) | Press the star button four times quickly. Or Settings › Accessibility › Screen reader |
| Fire TV | VoiceView | Hold Back + Menu for 2 seconds. Or Settings › Accessibility › VoiceView |
| LG | Audio Guidance | Settings › All Settings › General › Accessibility › Audio Guidance |
| Google TV, Android TV, Sony | TalkBack | Settings › System › Accessibility › TalkBack |
| Vizio | Talk Back | Menu › Accessibility › Talk Back |
While the reader is on, a selection may need two presses of OK instead of one. That is normal; keep going.
Without the remote
The shortcuts above are button presses, so they work from a phone remote as well as the plastic one, as long as the TV is on Wi‑Fi.
- Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
- Connect your phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
- Pick the TV in the list and confirm on the TV if it asks.
Then open the TV’s settings from the phone and follow the path in the table.
If the TV is not on Wi‑Fi, a phone app cannot reach it. Use the button on the TV where the menu allows it, a USB keyboard or mouse on Samsung, LG and Google TV sets, or an infrared universal remote. See connect a TV to Wi‑Fi without a remote.
If the voice is only in one app or one channel
A voice that describes what happens on screen, but only during a film or show, is not the screen reader. It is an audio description track. Open the audio or subtitles menu of that app while the video plays and choose the plain language track, for example “English” instead of “English – Audio Description”.
On antenna or cable channels, look for Audio Language, SAP or Video Description in the TV’s sound or accessibility settings and switch it off.
