To connect a TV to Wi‑Fi without a remote, plug in a USB keyboard or mouse (Samsung, LG, Sony, Google TV) or an Ethernet cable, which needs no password. Roku TVs and Fire TVs accept neither keyboard: use Ethernet or the two-phone hotspot trick. A TV that is still online can be reached from a phone remote.
Which method works on which TV
| TV | USB keyboard or mouse | Ethernet | Hotspot trick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung (Tizen) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| LG (webOS) | Mouse | Yes | Yes |
| Sony, TCL, Hisense with Google TV | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Roku TV and Roku players | No | Models with a port | Yes |
| Fire TV | Sticks: no. Fire TV sets: most accept one | TVs and Cube | Yes |
| Vizio | Keyboard on many models | Models with a port | Yes |
1. USB keyboard or mouse
Plug it into a USB port on the TV. With a keyboard, arrow keys move, Enter selects and Esc goes back. With a mouse, a pointer appears and you click the on-screen keyboard. Open the network settings, choose your Wi‑Fi and enter the password. A wireless keyboard with a USB receiver works the same way.
2. Ethernet cable
Run a cable from the router to the TV’s network port. The TV goes online without a password. Then put your phone on the same router’s Wi‑Fi, open a remote app, and set up wireless from the TV’s settings before you unplug the cable.
3. Phone app, if the TV is still online
Useful before you change routers or move.
- Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
- Connect your phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
- Pick the TV in the list and confirm on the TV if it asks.
Open the TV’s network settings, pick the new Wi‑Fi and enter the password. The app loses the TV when it changes network; join the new Wi‑Fi on the phone and connect again.
4. The hotspot trick
A TV that was set up before keeps trying to rejoin its last network. Create a phone hotspot with exactly the same name and password as that network, restart the TV, and it connects. A second phone on the same hotspot can then control the TV and move it to your real Wi‑Fi. Step by step: for Roku and for Fire TV. It does not work on a TV that has been factory reset.
5. Infrared universal remote
An inexpensive universal remote that lists your TV brand works with no network at all, which makes it the dependable fallback for a TV that is brand new or freshly reset.
