Sony TV Remote Not Working? How to Fix It

Sony Bravia TVs run Google TV or Android TV. Their remotes send power by infrared and, on voice remotes, the other keys over Bluetooth.

To fix a Sony TV remote, put in fresh batteries, unplug the TV for a minute, and pair the remote again if it has a microphone button. If the Sony TV is on Wi‑Fi, Kliky on your phone controls it while you sort the remote out.

  1. Replace the batteries
  2. Restart the TV
  3. Pair the remote again

Which Sony remote do you have?

Sony ships two kinds. The standard remote is infrared, has number keys and needs no pairing. The voice remote has a microphone button; power is infrared and the other keys use Bluetooth, which is why it can turn the TV on and then do nothing else.

Recent Bravia remotes are small, with no number keys and a backlight on some models; they are all the Bluetooth kind.

Reset the Sony remote

Sony’s support steps for a remote that does not respond:

  1. Remove the batteries.
  2. Hold the remote’s Power button for 3 seconds.
  3. Put the batteries back, matching + and −. If that changes nothing, leave them out for a minute and try once more with a fresh pair.
  4. Restart the TV by unplugging it for two minutes.

To pair a Sony voice remote again, hold Volume − and the microphone button together until the light on the remote blinks, then follow the message on the TV.

Fixing the Sony remote

Replace both batteries, then point the remote at your phone’s front camera and press a key. A flash on the phone screen means the remote sends infrared; a voice remote may flash only on Power.

  • Sony Google TV or Android TV: open Settings › Remotes & Accessories and pair the remote; the TV shows which buttons to hold. More in Google TV remote not working.

If nothing changes, unplug the Sony TV for a minute. A TV that has frozen ignores a working remote.

The buttons on the Sony TV itself

A Sony TV has a Power button under the Sony logo or on the back near the lower edge, usually with + and − next to it. Pressing Power on the TV and then using + and − to move through its short menu is enough to reach inputs.

Use your phone as the Sony remote

  1. Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Connect the phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
  3. Pick the TV in the list. Type the six-digit code the TV shows.

Replacing a Sony remote

Sony’s standard infrared remotes work across most Bravia years for the basics. For voice, buy the voice remote listed for your model, since the pairing method changed between Android TV and Google TV generations.
