Stop using the remote. Do not take the batteries out while they are hot. Put the remote on a hard, non-flammable surface such as tile or stone and let it cool completely. Do not charge it. Then contact Roku support about a replacement, and control the Roku from your phone with Kliky meanwhile.
What to do right now
- Put the remote down on tile, stone or concrete, away from fabric and paper.
- Leave the batteries where they are until the remote is cool.
- If it is a rechargeable remote, unplug the charging cable.
- Once cool, remove replaceable batteries and dispose of them. Do not reuse them.
This follows Roku’s own guidance for a remote that feels hot.
Why it happens
The usual causes are a damaged or leaking battery, mixing old and new batteries or two different types, a battery inserted the wrong way round, and charging a rechargeable remote with a damaged cable. A remote that got wet can also short internally.
Afterwards
Do not go back to a remote that overheated, even if it works with new batteries. Contact Roku support; a remote under warranty is replaced. For buying one yourself, see Roku remote replacement.
The Roku itself is unaffected. A Roku that is on your Wi‑Fi takes commands from a phone on the same network:
- Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
- Connect your phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
- Pick the TV in the list and confirm on the TV if it asks.
