Roku Express ships with a simple infrared remote and accepts either kind. Express 4K+, Streaming Stick and Streaming Stick 4K ship with a voice remote, and the sticks need one. Roku Ultra ships with the Voice Remote Pro. A Roku voice remote works with all of them; a simple remote does not work with sticks.

Roku model numbers and their remotes
The four-digit model number is on the label under the Roku and under Settings › System › About. The letters after it (X, R, RW) mark the retail version and do not change which remote works.
| Model number | Device | Remote type |
|---|---|---|
| 3500 | Streaming Stick (HDMI version) | Wireless remote only |
| 3800 | Streaming Stick | Voice remote only |
| 3810 | Streaming Stick+ | Voice remote only |
| 3920 | Premiere | Simple or voice remote |
| 3930 | Express | Simple or voice remote |
| 4802 | Ultra | Voice Remote Pro; simple also works |

Why a remote from one Roku may not work on another
A simple remote sends infrared, so it only works with a Roku that has an infrared window on the front: the Express, Premiere, Ultra and Streambar. Sticks plug in behind the TV and have no such window.
A voice remote is paired wirelessly and works with any of them. That is why “Roku Express remote” and “Roku Streaming Stick remote” are really the same question: does your Roku need a voice remote or not.
Picking a replacement
- Stick of any kind: a Roku voice remote. Nothing infrared.
- Express or Premiere: either kind. A voice remote also adds TV volume and power buttons.
- Ultra: the Voice Remote Pro keeps the remote finder and rechargeable battery it came with.
More detail is in Roku remote replacement. Pairing steps are in how to pair a Roku remote.
The remote that fits every model
A phone app talks to the Roku over Wi‑Fi, so the infrared question does not arise. Kliky controls an Express, a Stick and an Ultra the same way, and lists each Roku in the house separately.
