Check that the phone is on the same Wi‑Fi as the Roku and that VPN is off. On the Roku, open Settings › System › Advanced system settings › Control by mobile apps › Network access and set it to Default. Restart the Roku by unplugging it. If the Roku itself is offline, no app can find it: reconnect it first.
The setting most people miss
Roku has a switch that decides whether apps may control it: Settings › System › Advanced system settings › Control by mobile apps › Network access. Set to Disabled, every remote app is locked out. Default allows devices on your home network. You need a working remote, or the TV buttons plus patience, to reach it.
Same network, same name
On the Roku, Settings › Network › About shows the network name and whether it is connected. Compare it with the Wi‑Fi name on your phone. Guest networks and a second router with its own network keep the two apart. Turn off any VPN on the phone.
Restart the Roku properly
Unplug the Roku from power, and a Streaming Stick from the TV as well, for a few minutes. Plug it back in, wait for the Home screen, then reopen the app.
Roku TV asleep
A Roku TV in deep standby drops off Wi‑Fi. Turn on Fast TV start under Settings › System › Power to keep it reachable, or wake the TV with its button.
If the Roku is offline
Roku states that its app cannot detect a Roku that is not connected to the internet, and the same holds for every other app. See connect a Roku to Wi‑Fi without a remote.
Try a different app
If the network checks out and one app still fails, another may connect: they all use the same Roku control, but handle discovery differently. Kliky finds Roku devices on your Wi‑Fi without a Roku account.
