Remote App Can’t Find Your TV? 9 Things to Check

“It worked yesterday and now it can’t find my TV” is the most common complaint on every TV forum. The cause is nearly always the network between the phone and the TV, not the app.

A remote app finds a TV only when both are on the same local network. Check in order: the phone is on Wi‑Fi, not mobile data; both use the same network name, not a guest network; VPN is off; the app has Local Network permission; the TV is awake. Then restart TV, phone and router.

  1. Check the network
  2. Turn off VPN
  3. Allow local network access
  4. Restart

1–3. The network

  1. Phone on Wi‑Fi. On mobile data the phone is not in your home network at all.
  2. Same network name. Many routers broadcast two names, such as Home and Home‑5G, or a separate guest network. Devices on a guest network cannot see each other. Put the phone on the network the TV uses; the TV shows its network under Settings › Network.
  3. Mesh and extenders are fine as long as they extend the same network. A travel router or a second router creating its own network is not.

4–6. The phone

  1. VPN off. A VPN sends the phone’s traffic away from the local network, and the TV becomes invisible. The same goes for iCloud Private Relay in some setups.
  2. Local Network permission (iPhone). Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network: switch the app on. If you tapped “Don’t Allow” at first launch, this is the cause.
  3. Nearby devices permission (Android), if the app asked for it.

7–8. The TV

  1. Is the TV actually online? Open any streaming app on it. A TV that dropped off Wi‑Fi, or was reset, cannot be found by any app.
  2. TV-side settings. Roku: Settings › System › Advanced system settings › Control by mobile apps › Network access must not be Disabled. LG: LG Connect Apps on. Samsung: check Device Connection Manager and remove a stale entry for your phone.

A TV in deep standby also disappears from the network. Turn it on with its button first.

9. Restart everything, in this order

Unplug the TV for a full minute. Restart the router and wait until Wi‑Fi is back. Restart the phone. This clears stale addresses, which is what usually breaks a connection that “worked yesterday”.

When the remote and the app both stopped

If the plastic remote does nothing and the app cannot find the TV, suspect the TV: it has frozen or lost its network. Unplug it for a minute. If it comes back but stays offline, see connect a TV to Wi‑Fi without a remote.

Using a phone hotspot

If the TV is connected to your phone’s hotspot, that same phone often cannot see it. Run the remote app on a second phone or tablet connected to the hotspot.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t my phone remote app find my TV?

The phone and TV are not on the same local network, or something blocks them from seeing each other: a guest network, a VPN, or a missing Local Network permission on iPhone.

The app worked yesterday and now can’t find the TV. Why?

Usually a changed network address or a TV that dropped off Wi‑Fi. Unplug the TV for a minute, restart the router and the phone, and check the phone is on the same network name.

My remote won’t work and the app can’t find my TV. What now?

The TV is probably offline or frozen. Unplug it for a minute. If it is still offline, reconnect it to Wi‑Fi with a USB keyboard, Ethernet or the hotspot method.

Does it matter if my phone is on 5 GHz and the TV on 2.4 GHz?

Not if both bands belong to the same network. It matters when the router gives them separate network names that are isolated from each other.
