To control a TV with Alexa or Google Assistant, link it in the assistant’s app: Fire TV under TV & Video in the Alexa app, Roku through the Roku skill, Samsung through SmartThings, LG through ThinQ. Then say “turn on the TV” or “open Netflix”. Menus and typing still need a phone remote such as Kliky.
Setup by TV
| TV | Alexa | Google Assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Fire TV | Alexa app › TV & Video › Fire TV › Link Your Alexa Device | Not supported |
| Roku and Roku TV | Roku skill, sign in to your Roku account | Google Home › add device › Roku |
| Samsung | SmartThings skill, Samsung account | SmartThings in Google Home |
| LG | LG ThinQ skill, LG account | LG ThinQ in Google Home |
| Google TV, Chromecast | Limited | Built in: appears in Google Home |
All of these need the TV already on Wi‑Fi and signed in to the maker’s account. A TV that was reset cannot be set up by voice.
What you can say
- “Turn on the TV” and “turn off the TV”. Turning on needs the TV to stay connected in standby.
- “Volume up”, “mute”, “set volume to 20”. On a Roku player, as opposed to a Roku TV, volume is not available.
- “Open YouTube”, “play The Bear on Hulu”, “pause”, “rewind 30 seconds”.
- “Switch to HDMI 2” on Roku TV, Fire TV sets and Samsung.
What voice cannot do
Voice cannot move a highlight around a menu, pick a profile, click “Skip intro”, or type a Wi‑Fi password. Sign-in screens and settings need direction keys and a keyboard. A phone on the same Wi‑Fi has both:
- Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
- Connect your phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
- Pick the TV in the list and confirm on the TV if it asks.
