With no remote, you can still start a show by casting. Put the phone on the same Wi‑Fi as the TV, open YouTube, Netflix or another app, tap the Cast or AirPlay icon and pick the TV. Casting cannot change inputs or settings; for those use a phone remote such as Kliky.
How to cast
- Turn the TV on with its button.
- Connect the phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
- Open the streaming app on the phone and tap the Cast or AirPlay icon.
- Choose the TV and press play.
The TV fetches the video itself, so the phone can lock or do other things. On a Chromecast or Google TV, starting a cast also switches the TV to the right input.
Which TVs accept it
| TV or device | Cast button in apps | AirPlay from iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Chromecast, Google TV, Android TV | Yes | On some TV models |
| Roku and Roku TV | YouTube, Netflix and some others | Yes, on most current models |
| Fire TV | YouTube, Netflix and some others | On Fire TV sets that list AirPlay |
| Samsung, LG | YouTube, Netflix and some others | Yes, on models from about 2018–2019 on |
| Vizio | Yes, Chromecast built in | Yes, on SmartCast models |
The app has to be installed on the TV for YouTube- and Netflix-style casting to work on Roku, Fire TV, Samsung and LG.
Where casting stops
Casting controls one app’s playback. It cannot change the input, open settings, sign in to an app on the TV, or get a TV onto Wi‑Fi. For those you need direction keys, which a phone remote provides on the same network:
- Install Kliky from the App Store or Google Play.
- Connect your phone to the same Wi‑Fi as the TV.
- Pick the TV in the list and confirm on the TV if it asks.
To show the phone’s whole screen rather than one app’s video, see Screen Mirroring.
